From the Alps to industrial archeology, Biella has written the myth of Piedmont’s textile industry. The industrial origins of the Alps are reflected in the impressive site located alongside the Cervo river, which flows down from the mountain range. But the myth of Biella’s sacred textiles is at risk of decline with the unsustainable environment brought about by industrialization. This proposal involves renovating an existing old factory building to create a cultural hub for the fashion and textile industries.
알프스로부터 산업 고고학까지, 비엘라(Biella)는 이탈리아 피에몬테 주의 섬유산업의 신화를 써내려왔다. 알프스의 산업적 기원은 산맥에서 흘러내리는 체르보(Cervo) 강 옆에 위치한 인상적인 대지에 반영되어 있다. 그러나 비엘라의 신성한 직물에 대한 신화는 산업화로 인해 지속 불가능한 환경으로 인해 쇠퇴할 위기에 처해 있다. 이 지역의 직물 산업의 역사를 이해하고, 진흥시키기 위한 패션 허브를 만들기 위해 우리의 설계안은 기존의 오래된 공장 건물을 개조 및 확장시킨다.
The new design intervention was to maximize the symbolism of Biella’s textile industry, while at the same time highlighting the old and the new, the artificial and the natural, by contrasting anti-symbolic and neutral materials. As part of this design strategy, a lightweight fabric that contrasts with the skin of the existing concrete and masonry building is intervened between the two buildings.
새로운 디자인 개입의 핵심은 직물 산업의 상징성을 극대화하는 동시에 반상징적 소재와 중립적 소재를 대조하여 옛 것과 새 것, 인공과 자연을 강조하는 것이었다. 위 디자인 전략의 일환으로 기존 콘크리트 및 석조 건물의 외피와 대비되는 가벼운 패브릭을 두 건물 사이에 개입시킨다.
Fabric is a flat material. By making full use of the conflicting forces of tension and compression, these fabrics break away from the limitations of flat materials and inspire and spread the fabric myth of the Biella region. Furniture and exhibition stands made from recycled fabric and compressed felt explore new possibilities of fabric in a different way from the general method of weaving and sewing fabric. On the other hand, the act of hanging fabric on a truss or beam maximizes the characteristics of the material called fabric by fully utilizing tensile force rather than compressive force. Fabrics that look as if they will fly in the wind and fabrics that look like concrete will not only suggest sustainable use of recycled fabrics to artists, but will also stimulate the intellectual curiosity of visitors.
패브릭은 일반적으로 평면적인 소재이다. 우리는 인장력과 압축력이라는 상충되는 힘을 최대한 활용하여 평면 소재의 한계를 벗어나 비엘라 지역의 원단 신화를 고취하고 전파하고자 한다. 재생원단과 압축펠트로 제작된 가구와 전시대는 일반적인 직물을 짜고 봉제하는 방식과는 다른 방식으로 직물의 새로운 가능성을 탐구한다. 반면, 트러스나 보에 패브릭을 거는 행위는 압축력이 아닌 인장력을 십분 활용하여 소재의 특성을 극대화시킨다. 바람에 날아갈 것 같은 패브릭과 콘크리트처럼 보이는 패브릭, 두 요소는 잠재적인 예술가들에게 재활용 패브릭의 지속가능한 사용을 제안할 뿐만 아니라 관람객의 지적 호기심을 자극할 것이다.
Among the main architectural elements, marble and fabric are mythological symbols of the Biella region of Italy. On the other hand, mirrors and metals are anti-symbolic as they absorb all symbols. In other words, fabric represents historical significance, and aluminum and iron represent reflection on history. Our proposal adopts a design strategy that contrasts the two polar elements of fabric and metal as the main materials that make up the space, and seeks to realize the elements of ‘The Third Paradise’ by
Michaelangelo Pistoletto
on the site through reflective and referential spatial composition.
주요 건축 요소 중 대리석과 직물은 이탈리아 비엘라 지역의 신화적 상징이다. 반면에 거울과 금속은 모든 상징을 흡수한다는 점에서 반상징적이다. 즉, 직물은 역사적 의미를 나타내고, 알루미늄과 철은 역사에 대한 성찰을 의미한다. 이 설계안은 공간을 구성하는 주재료인 패브릭과 금속이라는 두 가지 극성 요소를 대조하는 디자인 전략을 채택하고, 반사적이고 참조적인 공간 구성을 통해 클라이언트인 미켈란젤로 피스톨레토가 언급한 '제3의 낙원' 요소를 대지에 구현한다.
To conclude, the design subtly connects ‘made in Italy’ and fashion as synonymous with each other through a dialectical juxtaposition of symbolic and anti-symbolic elements of the textile industry of Biella. The exhibitions, workshops, and fashion design hub that take place here function as a cultural concentration for edutainment and become a hub for exchanging and promoting the talents of artists between the natural environment and the Anthropocene.
결론적으로 이 설계안은 비엘라의 직물 산업의 상징과 반상징적인 요소의 변증법적인 병치를 통해 이탈리아와 패션을 서로 동의어로 미묘히 연결시킨다. 이곳에서 열리는 전시, 워크숍, 패션 디자인 허브는 에듀테인먼트를 위한 문화적 중심지로 기능하고, 자연 환경과 인류세 사이에서 예술가들의 재능을 교류하고 이를 확산시키는 주요 거점이 될 것이다.
