The site is the granite ground that directly faces the Han River. It holds its memories just as the granite ground had been uplifted, eroded, and deposited over a long period. The site, where kings had hunted hawks in Joseon Dynasty, was divided into two levels to build the citizen’s apartments in the 1970s. After the apartments were demolished, greeneries including forsythia were created before the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

대지는 한강과 직접 접하는 강북의 화강암 지반이다. 화강암 지반이 단단하지만 오랜 세월 동안 융기, 침식, 퇴적되어 그 세월의 켜를 간직하고 있는 것처럼, 이 대지는 땅의 기억들을 간직하고 있다. 조선시대 태종 이래로 매를 사냥해오던 산으로 응봉산(鷹峰山)으로 불리게 되었으며, 인근에는 한강을 바라보며 책을 읽던 독서당이 있었다. 1970년대에는 난개발과 함께 행응 시민아파트 조성을 위하여 대지는 단차를 가진 두 레벨의 땅으로 나누어졌다. 안전상의 이유로 시민아파트가 철거된 후, 88 서울올림픽 개막을 앞두고 개나리 식재 등 녹지화가 진행되었다.

Excavating the traces of the past, place memories, is not just a mere restoration. Rather, it is closer to reconstructing the primitive memories between nature, site, and humans by using the past as a mirror. As such, the project is not limited to a mythical retrospection, but defines the primitive hut of Eungbong in 2022, as a new possibility in Anthropocene.

As an artificial stone, the concrete reconstructs place memories with a cantilever structure. The concrete slab is oriented towards the south where visitors can see Seoul Forest and the Han River, and towards the north where residential areas and apartments are located. This creates an ambivalence between nature and man-made. As visitors observe the ambivalent view in the primitive hut, they redefine their relationship between nature and man-made.

이렇듯 이 땅은 자연과의 관계를 긍정적으로 맺었던 기억도, 난개발로 인한 상처도 이면에 간직하고 있다. 땅의 기억을 다시 끄집어내는 것은 단순한 과거로의 회귀, 복구가 아니다. 오히려 이는 자연, 대지, 인간 사이의 원시적 기억들을 새롭게 재구성하는 것에 가깝다. 즉 이 프로젝트는 신화적 회고에 한정되지 않고 2022년, 응봉의 원시 오두막을 인류세의 새로운 가능성으로서 정의한다.

땅의 기억을 재현할 수 있는 ‘인공적인 돌’로서의 콘크리트는 대지의 화강암과 상호 관입된다. 콘크리트 슬라브는 남쪽으로는 서울숲과 한강이 보이는 ‘자연’을 향하고, 북쪽으로는 주택가와 아파트로 상징되는 ‘인공’을 향한다. 방문객들은 ‘자연’과 ‘인공’의 경계에 위치한 원시 오두막에서 양가적(兩價的)인 시선으로 주변을 둘러보고, 그 관계를 재정의한다.
