The project materializes the place memory of this land as the third landscape within the context of the landscapes of Altteureu Airfield and oreums.
The site is on the oreum and olle-route at the center of the tragic modern history of Jeju. Seotaloreum, one of the three oreums branching from Mt. Songaksan, is the history and landscape of the site, and is characterized by the fact that it is not a complete circle, but is a horseshoe-shaped cone with one side open. These volcanic cones retain painful historical memories behind their geographical imperfections. It was the largest ammunition depot built by the forced mobilization of Jeju residents during the Japanese occupation, and an airplane hangar and anti-aircraft gun positions remain. After liberation, the ammunition depot was blown up, and a large pit was formed. During the 4.3 massacre, about 250 residents were brutally murdered and buried on the site. The remnants left by the Japanese, such as hangars and anti-aircraft gun positions, and the massacre site remember the pain like the imperfection of the three oreums.
본 설계안은 알뜨르 비행장과 오름이라는 서로 다른 풍경의 맥락 속에서 이 땅의 장소기억을 '제3의 풍경'으로 구체화하는 건축적 실험이다.
대지는 제주의 비극적인 근대사의 중심에 있는 오름과 올레길 상에 존재한다. 송악산에서 분기한 세 개의 오름 중 하나인 섯알오름은 이 대지의 역사이자 풍경이며, 완결적인 원형의 형태가 아니라 한쪽이 터져있는 말굽형 오름인 점이 특징이다. 이 오름들은 그 지리적인 불완전함 속에 역사적으로 아픈 기억을 이면에 간직하고 있다. 이곳은 일제가 제주도민을 강제 동원하여 구축한 가장 큰 탄약고 자리였으며, 비행기 격납고와 고사포 진지가 남아있다. 해방 후 탄약고가 폭파되며 큰 구덩이가 생기게 되었는데, 4.3 예비검속 사건 당시 주민 250여명이 무참하게 총살되었고 이곳에 암매장당했다. 지하벙커와 고사포진지 등 일제가 남긴 잔재들, 그리고 그 잔재 위에서 발생한 학살터는 오름의 불완전함처럼 그 아픔을 기억하고 있다.
The architecture to be built on the site is defined by its historical relationship with anti-aircraft gun positions, hangars, and the 4.3 massacre site, based on those place memories. Visitors experience the surroundings with slow breathing, like on the olle-route which is based on the interpenetration with landscape rather than emphasizing directionality.
이곳에 들어설 건축은 이러한 장소기억을 바탕으로 고사포진지, 격납고, 그리고 4.3 학살터와 역사적 관계 속에서 정의된다. 이는 방향성 자체보다는 주변 풍경의 열리고 닫히는 시선과 몸의 체험이 중요한 올레길의 성격과 상통한다.
Entering the main gallery, visitors can see Mt. Sanbangsan straight in the eye, and Altteureu Airfield on the left, Seotaloreum on the right side. Rammed earth concrete forms a micro-topography like an oreum protuberated on the wide Alttureu plain. In contrast, the wooden beam structure made of laminated timber forms a neutral, flat roof that contrasts with the micro-topography, symbolizing the modernization of Jeju. Visitors comprehend the modern history of Jeju before and after the Japanese colonial period in a variety of ways through not only the artefacts on display but also the scenery of the places where that history was staged.
메인 갤러리에 들어서면 정면에 산방산이 원경으로 보이고, 좌측과 우측으로는 각각 알뜨르 비행장과 섯알오름을 확인할 수 있다. 건축의 주 재료인 흙벽 콘크리트(rammed earth concrete)는 넓은 알뜨르 벌판에 융기된 하나의 인공적 오름으로 미지형(微地形)을 형성한다. 이러한 미지형과 대비되는 집성재(laminated timber) 목재보구조는 중성적인 평지붕을 구축하며, 두 가지 재료, 그리고 조적식과 가구식이라는 두 구축방식의 대비는 제주에서의 근대화를 은유한다. 서로 다른 구축 아래에서 관람객들은 4.3 사건 혹은 일제강점기 당시의 유물들뿐만 아니라, 그 역사의 무대였던 장소의 차경을 통해서 제주의 근대사를 다원적으로 확인한다.
As visitors pass through the service building with a cafe and information center and move to the gallery and special exhibition, they look outdoors at the surrounding oreum and Altteureu Airfield, as well as evidence of modern history mixed within. In conclusion, the museum integrates the neglected evidence of modern history into the third landscape by creating an artificial oreum. Visitors walking the olle-route are expected to be able to feel through the body and comprehend Jeju’s modern history more deeply within its site context.
관람객들은 카페와 인포메이션 센터가 있는 서비스 건물을 지나 각 전시관으로 이동하면서, 야외에서는 주변 오름과 알뜨르 비행장, 그리고 그 속에 혼재된 근대사적 증거들을 바라본다. 결론적으로 이 설계안은 하나의 인공적인 오름으로써 주변에 방치된 근대사의 증거물들을 ‘제3의 풍경’으로 통합한다. 이를 통해 올레길을 걷는 방문객들은 그 장소성과 맥락 속에서 제주의 근대역사에 대해 더 깊이 느끼고 고찰할 수 있을 것이다.
